China is a leading producer of food and agricultural products in the world and one of the top markets for U.S. agricultural exports. China’s economy grew 5% in 2024, to $18.77 trillion USD according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which was in line with the country’s annual target. As the 2nd-largest consumer market and importer in the world, China continues to expand its agricultural and food products market access, having approved imports of 146 agricultural and food products 51 countries and regions.

As consumption levels rise and dietary habits diversify, demand for premium seafood is growing rapidly in the Chinese market. In 2024, China’s total volume of seafood sales increased by 3% to 44 million tons. Fish was the best performing category, with total volume sales growing by 3% to 27 million tons. At $54 million in import value in 2024, China is the 2nd largest importer of seafood from Southern United States. U.S. suppliers that register with SUSTA for this activity will have the benefit of exploring the Chinese market at a very low cost.
